Thursday 20th
We packed up the caravan and headed to Wyndham to the crocodile farm.
This is what greets you when you enter Wyndham! A giant croc!! We had to drive a few more kms to reach the croc farm.
This croc was outside the croc farm and the kids thought they could conquer this one.
The funny thing was as we started to walk around in the croc farm and look in the cages we saw crocodiles but thought they were fake as they didn't move and some even had their mouths open, no signs of breathing or blinking, until Tim said he saw one move his eye lid. Then Kimberly said one shut it's mouth a little bit. It was so hard to see any movement that it took a long time for us all to be convinced that they were real.
These were salt water crocs, the big ones and one was up to 4.5m long! They just laid motionless like this for so long. The tour guide said that they don't move much at all in this dry season as it is too cold for them. If we were here in the wet season they would be moving a lot. But when the tour guide got some meat out we did see some movement.
The big guy moved over to the edge and head up to get the chunk of meat.
This guy had to get his chunk of meat off of the cement so turned his head on the side to pick it up. They splashed in the water a lot as they were getting their food so that meant a lot of us got wet watching.
The kids got to touch a bady croc which kept calling out for it's mum. As we started the tour we went to a large enclosure where the tour guide got in and chucked a 20L spray container which had a rope attached to it, which was attached to the fence, into the water. There was a crocodile in there that comes up and attacks the container and has a bit of a game with it. He gets his piece of meat when he is finished. We were all around the outside of the cage when this croc came out of the water grabbing at the container. You couldn't see it coming at all and it made everyone jump. He tossed it around for quite a while then disappeared into the water again. They are amazing stalkers. The kids loved this and kept walking around for ages looking at these amazing , big animals that were on the other side of the fence!!!!
After that bit of excitment we headed to the Grotto which was on the way back to Kununurra. It was a local swimming place but at this time of the year the water was stagnant and not swimable so we stayed there exploring and catching tiny frogs.
We then made camp at the same free spot that we stayed at Monday night. The couple that we were talking to then had said that they spent 2 weeks on the Gibb River road and they said you could get supplies by getting a bush order sent out to you and when I had been shopping in Kununurra there was an employee in Coles packing up an order for bush orders. A great idea.
